SEA FAN Summer Program 2023

Cohort I

World Wetlands Day is held each February to commemorate the importance of wetlands around the globe.  While much of Montego Bay’s shoreline boasts critical mangrove habitat (including Bogue Lagoon Fish Sanctuary), ongoing efforts are required to help replant mangroves impacted by encroachment, deforestation and debris.

Earth Day is one of the oldest and most widely celebrated conservation events in the world.  Established to raise awareness to the fragility of earth ecosystems, Earth Day sees many visitors participating in Trust organized cleanups and environmental fetes.

Recognized as the single largest global cleanup event in history, the International Coastal Cleanup unites the globe in an effort to remove and count the amount of waste entering our oceans.

Ecosystem Monitoring Techniques

The Sea Fan Explorers will experience hands-on surveying techniques for the various ecosystems in the park (MPA)

Invasive Species Monitoring

The Sea Fan Explorers are introduced to the invasive Lionfish Species and taught how to remove venomous spines and dissect them.

Monitoring Keystone Species

Parrotfish are instrumental to the healthy functioning of the coral reef ecosystem. Sea Fan Explorers are taught the importance of the species, and learn how to identify those found in the Caribbean

Biodiversity

The Montego Bay Marine Park has a diverse ecosystem which includes, coral reefs, sea grass and mangroves. The Sea Fan explorers will survey these areas and gain knowledge of their importance.

Global Warming & Climate Change

Sea Fans will learn the impacts of Global warming and climate change on the marine environment and steps they can take to contribute to the reduction and mitigation of the challenges faced.

Coastal cities are often ridden with pollution. Sea Fans will explore the causes and effects of pollution in the marine environment
